“Will AI tools, including ChatGPT, take away my copywriting job?” or something similar along the line goes viral these days.

Can ChatGPT really take away your job, or is it just a myth?

Considering AI tools’ capabilities, I would say it’s a fair concern and fear among copywriters. However, can AI or ChatGPT take away a copywriter’s creativity and human touch?

This article will answer all such questions from a balanced perspective, considering the capabilities of both copywriters and ChatGPT. It’ll be more than surface-level information like many other web articles.

Keep on reading to find out more!

About ChatGPT

ChatGPT(Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is an AI tool OpenAI developed and released in November 2022. When you query your needs, the chatGPT scans through tons of textual content, including blog articles, social media posts, research papers, white papers, and essays, and constructs the response in text format.

So, with that in mind, I wanted to ask it to write a 1500-word article on whether ChatGPT will replace copy writers. I did that and hit enter. Boom! I was overwhelmed by what I got. Before

I could blink my eye, it generated the content below within a splash of a second:

will chatgpt replce copywriters

Sure, the content it generated didn’t have human emotions or a human tone. The structure, too, was generic and looked like an essay to me. However, the spelling and grammar were spot on; furthermore, it passed the Copyspace for being 100% unique.

As a copywriter, I have tirelessly spent hours, days, and months honing my skills to produce remarkable copies. But AI can make copies such as the above within a few milliseconds.

So as copywriters, do the above examples instill fear and anxiety in your minds that your jobs will be taken away by chatGPT? Let’s find out in the next section.

Can ChatGPT Replace Copywriters?

First things first, the answer to whether ChatGPT would overtake your copywriting is no. I will show you why.

Many Clients Value Human Written Content Over AI

If you head over to many freelancing websites, such as Upwork, you’ll often see in job descriptions that say, “No ChatGPT or AI tools, please,” or something along the lines. It’s because these quality clients know that the content that AI generates lacks:

  • 100% uniqueness and authenticity
  • Human emotions, such as incorporating a sense of humor into the content.
  • Depth and creativity that highly skilled writers possess.
  • Understanding of brand voice and tone to generate personalized content.
  • SEO skills to incorporate keywords into your content. As a result, your content will not be visible on search engines.
  • Structure and substance in texture.
  • Unintentional plagiarism and quality issues.

AI Content Is Good Or Bad As Your Input

The quality of the AI or ChatGPT-generated content depends on how good or bad the instructions you provide in ChatGPT’s search box. It’s the same scenario when you work with copywriters. You’ll get a perfect or even marvelous copy if you provide clear and concise instructions.

Similarly, you’ll get an awful copy when you provide bad instructions to your copywriter or even an AI tool such as ChatGPT.

However, the difference is how humans receive instructions and process them.

For example, if you ask the ChatGPT to write a 4,000-word article in ‘x’ style and tone with a bit of humor, the final generated content would differ drastically from the first draft by a human copywriter. Because, AI can’t replace the human brain when making writing decisions based on emotional intelligence, empathy, context, creativity, and innovation.

ChatGPT Aren’t Content Strategists

Human copywriters aren’t auto-text generators. Similarly, AI tools, including ChatGPT, aren’t content strategists.

For copywriters who fear ChatGPT would take away their jobs, think deeply. Do you really expect the AIs to conduct interviews, act as your brand messaging curators, and produce exceptional content?

You have the answer.

Not every piece of content requires you to conduct interviews with industry experts. But for those who need them, human copywriters are streets ahead.

Now then, after reading this section, are you relieved that AI or ChatGPT will no longer take your job?

If so, why are so many of your fellow copywriters afraid of ChatGPT?

Let’s find out next, shall we?

Why Do Copywriters Fear ChatGPT?

Although ChatGPT won’t take away your hard-earned career, there are still certain aspects of copywriting that you need to be mindful of:

ChatGPT Generating Content At A Whooping Pace

Since ChatGPT generates headings, content outlines, and the content itself faster than humans, it is an ideal tool to produce more generic content. This includes how-to guides, FAQs, Tips, and top lists as long as you feed in the right instructions.

Therefore, AI or ChatGPT will replace generic copywriters who create general and repetitive content that requires a lack of creativity.

Intense Research Time For Human Copywriters

If you ask any copywriter what’s the most challenging part of their job 8/10, it’s doing extensive research to become experts on the subject that your superiors, a.k.a content editors or managers, demanded to write about.

Obviously, there are niches that we’re all confident about. However, when you have been asked to write a 2000–3000 word article in 3 days on a subject niche you’re unfamiliar with, you must research extensively, which consumes time.

As a result, you’ll be under immense burden in addition to the deadline pressure. In such scenarios, you may even be further scared that AI will take your job, as ChatGPT can generate tons of ideas in a split second.

Labor Cost Cutting

With AI’s ability to generate massive articles in milliseconds, there is no doubt that many organizations are willing to experiment with chatGPT to reduce labor costs. Here’s an interesting stat that backs it:

According to statistics that PriceWaterhouseCooper provides on its website, AI technologies are expected to contribute $15 trillion to the global economy by 2030. These numbers are fantastic for the company stakeholders who are always looking for cost-cutting methods. But what does that mean for the employees?

Well, the same page predicts that 3% of the jobs are at risk. Furthermore, by 2030, employees with low levels of educational qualifications will lose their positions in the range of 30%-44%.

So, what does it mean to copywriters with mediocre or average skills? They would need to upskill their skills or drop out of the workforce.

Even the super duper copywriters who don’t fall into this category must adapt to working with AI — more on this in the next section.

How Could Copywriters Benefit From ChatGPT?

As copywriters, you don’t need to worry about chatGPT taking away your job. Instead, you need to know how to use it in the best possible way for optimum productivity so that your copywriting career is not at risk.

Here’s what you could use the ChatGPT for:

Idea Indentation

As copywriters, I’m sure that you all have come across blank page syndrome. It’s not a nice feeling, isn’t it, when you have to stare at a blank page for quite a long time?

This is where you could utilize ChatGPT to generate content ideas for the topic that you’re about to write. Although the ideas are generic, you can expand them by letting your creative juices flow.

So, as you can see, ChatGPT speeds up your writing process instead of you suffering from blank page syndrome.

Content Outline Preparation

Once the ideas flow in from the above step, you’re all set to create the content outline. So, when creating the outline, the first step involves jotting down the subtopics (H2s) and subtopics within (H3s). Once again, you can use ChatGPT as a catalyst to speed up this process.

When the ChatGPT generates these subtopics, you add a bit of creativity and modify them to your liking.

Moving even further, you can ask the ChatGPT to generate ideas for each subtopic to make your life easier. In the meantime, you can omit any ideas that don’t fit the article or add your own thoughts.

Aids In Research

ChatGPT can carry out research to a deeper level, and you can even ask it to expand on specific terms you’re unfamiliar with, even in the generated content. You can clearly explain such terms when creating FAQs, particularly for your blog posts.

Furthermore, ChatGPT is capable of analyzing your competitors’ thought leadership campaigns. Then, as a copywriter, you can use this analysis to create your own thought leadership campaign.

However, be mindful of fact-checking the content that ChatGPT generates with a secondary source.

Wrapping It Up

Now, then, I’m sure you understand the capabilities of human copywriters and AI tools such as ChatGPT. As copywriters, we can’t halt the progress that ChatGPT advances or stop organizations from using it.

As you have seen in this article, there would be no room for mediocre average copywriters as ChatGPT can produce generic content. Therefore, it’s essential to upskill your skills as a copywriter.

On the other hand, brilliant copywriters stand out by striking the balance as mentioned above.
